Storm hangs on for rare win in Ottawa

By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury - Circling the wagons isn’t such a bad thing these days if the player you’re circling them around is goaltender by Brandon Foote.

The Guelph Storm played a rock-solid 40 minutes then, with the gas tank on empty, gutted-out the third period to down the Ottawa 67’s 4-3 Sunday afternoon in the nation’s capital.

The win gave Guelph a pair of victories on the three-game weekend Eastern swing. Saturday they downed Belleville 5-4. It also leaves them just for points back of the Owen Sound Attack in the race for the final playoff spot. Guelph has three games in hand on the Attack, who were idle Sunday.

Foote was instrumental in the weekend’s success. He made 104 saves over the three games, including 33 yesterday.

“Very tired,” the Whitby native said when asked over the phone how he felt.

“I felt dead out there in the third period, so I can only imagine how the rest of the guys felt. I knew I had to be there to make some key saves, but the guys were there for me too.”

The Storm led 4-3 heading into the third period, but the effects of three tough games in less than three days began to take its toll. They were outshot 10-5 in the final frame.

“Brandon gave us a chance to win again,” assistant coach Chris Hajt said. “Your goaltender needs to be your est player and he’s been playing great.
